Manye Academy

Manye Academy was founded in 2002 to educate children of migrant families in a squatter settlement in Kpone Barrier, Ghana.  Manye students are children of farmers, carpenters, construction workers, and, in some cases, rag pickers.  These students have dreams of growing up to be doctors, pilots, and bank managers.  With WPE involvement, Manye's first-ever graduation class has a 100% pass rate on the national exam, along with all of the graduates achieving distinction in at least one subject, far exceeding the national average.  More about MANYE.

WPE

World Partners in Education was founded in May 2008 by four American college students who volunteered abroad and found themselves teaching in schools that lacked basic infrastructure, such as desks, doors, paid teachers, or books.  They found a sharp contrast between their students' eagerness to learn and the resources available for them to do so.  WPE works with partner schools and communities to provide the tools necessary to ensure that every child has access to a quality education.

purpose

I am creating this blog to promote thought and discussion on the topic of childhood education in the developing world.  I hope to post relevant articles and information, and also to document the progress of my friend Ben's nonprofit World Partners in Education.

Some questions to consider include:

*impact of primary and secondary education on an individual, whether it be qualitative (ex: a student's personal story) or quantitative (ex: lifetime earnings)
*impact of an educational institution on its immediate community
*methods of improving access to education or, alternatively, removing barriers to it
*gender disparity in attending and completing one's schooling
*teaching and disciplining methods and their effectiveness
*understandings and misunderstandings within the educational community that result from cross-cultural involvement
